Nandita Mitra, Phd

Dr. Mitra's primary research interests include the design and analysis of observational studies, causal inference, and statistical approaches for cost-effectiveness analysis. In addition, she has expertise in statistical genetics, an area in which she has worked extensively on SNP and haplotype problems in the context of family-based and population based association studies. She has collaborated with investigators in a number of medical areas, including clinical genetics and oncology. Specifically she has worked on studies that have investigated genetic associations in melanoma and in breast, lung and colon cancers. She has also worked on population-based outcomes and cost-effectiveness studies using SEER-Medicare data in the areas of colon, prostate and bladder cancer.

Dr. Mitra currently serves as the Co-Director of the Center for Causal Inference and previously as the Chair of the Graduate Group in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She joined Penn's faculty in 2005, after having previously completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health in statistical genetics and then serving on the faculty of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Gary Hettinger, MS

Gary has been a Biostatistics PhD student at Penn since Fall 2020. He is primarily interested in causal inference and its applications to health policy and medical decision-making. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in Applied Math and Computer Science and a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Biostatistics. Before coming to Penn, Gary was an Associate Data Scientist at Xandr.

DANE ISENBERg, MS, MA

Dane is a rising fourth year biostatistics PhD student. He is broadly interested in causal inference and looks forward to exploring its vast applications. Before arriving to Penn, Dane was a high school mathematics teacher and hopes to continue his work with students during his PhD education and future employment. Dane holds an MS in Biostatistics from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in Mathematics from Brandeis University, and an MA in Statistics from Hunter College.

Ernesto Ulloa, PhD

Ernesto is a postdoctoral research in the Department of Biostatistics and Center for Causal Inference at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on causal inference, particularly in the context of analyzing data from medical claims and electronic health records. Before joining Penn, Ernesto earned his PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Washington.
